HILDE NIJS treats the plate not merely as a dynamic workspace, but as a laboratory, deliberately stepping away from the conventional approach to monotyping. Rather than following the standard process, her method is a complex fusion of printing, drawing, and intricate layering—alongside numerous other experimental techniques. Through this intensive process, she arrives at a highly distinctive and unique result. She refuses to stop until the final image perfectly aligns with what she envisioned.

This experimental way of working perfectly mirrors the way human identity is formed. After all, identity is not a static given, but a dynamic process of trial and error, shaped by conscious choices as well as unexpected turns. By printing multiple layers on top of one another, the final form becomes the result of an accumulation of decisions, coincidences, and material responses. Just as identity builds up in layers throughout life and is never truly 'finished', the image only solidifies at the exact moment the paper is pulled from the plate.
