HILDE NIJS — BIOGRAPHY

I. Artist Statement & Conceptual Urgency

Hilde NIJS (BE) is a multidisciplinary visual artist whose practice operates at the intersection of human consciousness, spatial psychology, and existential philosophy. Central to her work is the friction between the analogue human condition and the rise of a hyper-technological society. NIJS approaches contemporary world issues not through digital media, but as a palimpsest—translating complex literary, psychological, and historical frameworks into large-scale drawing cycles, tactile paintings, and monumental physical environments. Her oeuvre functions as both an intellectual and visual inquiry into how free human imagination, identity, and dignity can position themselves within future, automated realities.

II. Methodology, Drawing Cycles & Spatial Architecture

While Hilde NIJS’s practice is rigorously anchored in a deep study of psychoanalysis, philosophy, and art history, her physical execution is defined by an intuitive, material, and highly architectural engagement with space. NIJS employs a non-hierarchical approach to materials, seamlessly fusing drawings, industrial ready-mades, textiles, wood, iron, gold leaf, wires and threads with organic elements, glass, and innovative 3D-filament techniques. This material cross-pollination results in monumental, site-specific installations—ranging from large-scale museal presentations of up to 28 sculptures to life-sized, walk-through architectural models containing distinct Identity Rooms. Her work is structurally organized into ongoing, tactile conceptual series—such as The Demystification of Technology and Human versus Machinery—which analyze the psychological and existential impact of the modern world on the human mind.

Infomeric Art: In her recent practice, NIJS positions herself as the founder of 'Infomeric Art' — a term combining raw 'info' with the Ancient Greek 'meris' (share/offering). Within this distinct, autonomous art movement — where the architecture of her oeuvre consists of a network of ‘ongoing series’ carefully subdivided into numbered ‘sections’ — she claims a unique conceptual space where pure facts and visual power do not exclude, but rather reinforce one another. She transforms profound intellectual and societal investigation into powerful visual manifestations, where the completed work functions as a conceptual gift to the viewer.

III. Spatial Thinking & Curatorial Practice as Social Sculpture

A fundamental component of NIJS’s artistic practice is the redefinition of space as a 'social sculpture'. Between 2014 and 2019, she initiated and directed DeKANTFABRIEK, a large-scale, independent artist-run space housed within a historic passementerie factory. Within this raw, industrial context, she developed boundary-pushing total-installations that served as the catalyst for her most ambitious spatial works, including her life-sized, walk-through architectural environment My Identity Rooms (scale 1:1) and a major museum presentation of 28 white sculptures, Stakeholders for a Connected World. These projects were brought into direct correlation with academia, resulting in highly acclaimed dialogues with leading intellectuals, including psychoanalyst Prof. Dr. Paul Verhaeghe, philosopher Prof. Dr. Dirk De Wachter, and philosopher Prof. Dr. Willem Elias.

Building upon this monumental foundation, NIJS’s subsequent and current practice focuses on profound conceptual environments that bridge literature and philosophy. These include deep visual investigations into Thomas Mann’s The Magic Mountain (huMANNidentity, a worldwide sanatorium), the existential landscapes of philosopher Leopold Flam (Le Cavalier des Pensées), and her profound homage to Joseph Beuys, Der KaninchenMann, mein Name ist Joseph, which utilizes organic rabbit fur and elements to echo Beuysian mythologies.

Today, she continues this spatial and civic engagement through the Actueel Art Platform (A.A.P.). Harnessing decades of personal expertise in painting, drawing, installation art, ceramics, and monumental stained glass, NIJS brings a practice-based vision to this work. This expertise serves as a vital methodology to respect and safeguard the integrity of the analogue artwork within public and institutional spaces, remaining deeply committed to championing authentic artworks that stem directly from the raw studio practice. While she beautifully extends this spatial expertise into curated dialogues through the platform, her independent studio output remains the absolute driving force of her career; NIJS’s extensive oeuvre stands as a fully autonomous entity—an open invitation for the viewer to engage directly with her physical spatial grammar and consistent visual language.

Curatorial Review (Written in Dutch)

"Hilde NIJS verstaat haar vak.
